A hybrid is a vehicle that uses two powertrains, an engine and an electric motor.
Generally, they are classified into three types according to the ratio of engine and motor: full hybrid, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid.
1. Full hybrid
This is a system in which two drive systems work together, including an electric motor and a battery.
The biggest feature is that the engine and electric motor can each move independently.
Generally, at low speeds, the vehicle is driven only by the electric motor, and the engine intervenes when the vehicle reaches a certain speed. Also, when you slow down, the battery is automatically charged through regenerative braking, so there is no need to charge it.
2. Mild hybrid
An electric motor is included, but unlike a full hybrid, it cannot move with independent power. Instead, it only serves to assist the engine.
However, it has the advantage of being simple in design and not having a heavy curb weight.
3. Plug-in hybrid
This hybrid is the closest hybrid to an electric vehicle, and it has a larger battery than a typical hybrid. Therefore, charging cannot be done through regenerative braking alone, so it must be charged separately like an electric vehicle, so it has both an electric charging port and a fueling port.
- It is best to choose one based on your driving style. If you don't like charging but want good fuel efficiency, a full hybrid vehicle is suitable, a mild hybrid vehicle is suitable if you want to enjoy the hybrid system and the feeling of speed at the same time, and a plug-in hybrid vehicle is suitable if you want to travel a short distance like an electric car.
